Late Fee Analytics & Performance Project

Turning Billing & Payment Data Into Actionable Business Insight

Developed and managed a repeatable analytics framework for evaluating late-fee performance across complex enterprise utility portfolios—connecting billing, receipt, consolidation, client funding, payment, due-date, utility and financial data to determine where late fees occurred, why they occurred, who was responsible, and where process improvements could reduce future exposure.

Business Challenge

Late payment did not automatically explain responsibility.

Late fees could result from invoices received too close to the due date, client funding outside contracted timeframes, approval-to-pay requirements, first-bill scenarios, consolidation delays, recurring utility issues, or other operational exceptions. The challenge was creating a consistent methodology that separated these scenarios and produced actionable findings.

My Role

Analysis, validation and executive reporting

  • Analyzed and reconciled billing and payment datasets across multiple sources.
  • Developed repeatable late-fee reporting methodologies and KPIs.
  • Performed root-cause investigations and responsibility validation.
  • Reviewed operational performance against contractual requirements.
  • Identified recurring utility and account trends.
  • Prepared executive reporting packages and stakeholder recommendations.

The analysis moved beyond “Was the invoice paid late?” to determine what happened in the process that contributed to the late fee.

Root-Cause & Responsibility Analysis

Classifying transactions into actionable drivers

  • Not Enough Time to Pay From Received Date
  • Funded Outside Contracted Timeframe
  • First Bill / Account Transition
  • Approval to Pay
  • Consolidation-related and other operational drivers

Payment, funding, processing, invoice availability and contractual requirements were evaluated independently so responsibility was supported by operational data rather than assumed from the payment date alone.

Trend & Concentration Analysis

Finding recurring exposure and material changes

Monthly and multi-period reporting identified changes in late-fee dollars, bill counts, frequency, payment timing, funding performance, receipt methods, responsibility drivers and recurring utilities. Utility concentration analysis focused remediation on the highest-impact opportunities.

Reporting Standardization & Process Improvement

From individual investigations to a repeatable reporting program

Standardized KPI definitions, responsibility classifications, data-validation rules, executive summaries, utility comparisons, period-over-period reporting, Excel analysis, SQL-supported investigation and reporting templates—improving consistency and making complex operational results easier for leadership and business teams to act upon.
